A chair at the border

Europe. This side, the other side, and beyond.

Inside dwells a promise that's fading. From outside, a light still flickers through the fog. And at the border, the fluttering light bulb is smashed with clubs.

Nevertheless, the habitability of borders has long since become part of everyday life. They become a place of their own, one that wanders according to the will and unwillingness of the people who make the decisions.
That means violent waiting.

In a series of medium- to large-format paintings, I examine the beyond as a space where life takes place. Birthdays are celebrated, children are born, and dreams are dreamed.

Abysses, caves, and melting horizons emerge, accompanied by traces of life and waiting left behind. Landscape painting of our political present.

Biography

Malte Hein

Malte Hein lives and works in Berlin Schöneberg.
With his oil and acrylic paintings, he attempts to delve into the social and political zeitgeist and reveal how people interact with each other and the world.
His works are interspersed with symbols and abstract or fantastical landscapes in which he embeds his figures. His often dreamlike paintings deal with the vague search for something greater than ourselves, without revealing exactly what that might be or whether it even exists.

Malte Hein regularly invites visitors to his studio in the Kulturhaus Schöneberg for open studio days and other events.
